king's craw

"King Charles II, of glorious memory, delighted in eggs and ambergris, of which we may hope he partook moderately."

From 'Belgravia,' Mary Elizabeth Braddon

There's an interesting artifact in the scan of the book available via Google Book Search:

undead

Which is to say, yes, I'm not dead. Haven't posted in a while. Just haven't had anything to say. I'm a little weary right now.

Am probably going to end up hosting a regional rapier practice on Saturday. Should be interesting logistics. I've cleaned up my basement, have room for six people to fight if a bit snugly, and there are strips in the front yard and backyard that should be safe enough.

JANUARY I6th

"At this moment Mrs Hayes servant appeared with a smoking dish of bacon and greens."

--THACKERAY, Catherine A NOVEL

"A very desirable variation on the old dish of bacon and greens is often served in one household to the approval of family and guest Carefully prepare and cook spinach in the usual way season it with salt pepper and two or three table spoonfuls of cream or rather less of butter after you have drained and chopped it Fry very crisp thin slices of bacon and lay thickly over the dish of spinach The combination is appetizing"

The reason Milton wrote in fetters when he wrote of Angels & God, and at liberty when of Devils & Hell, is because he was a true Poet, and of the Devil's party without knowing it.

... with the careful application of beer

Threw a pork roast into the slow cooker and added caraway seeds, crushed juniper berries, salt, and a beer.

Actually ended up keeping my son on New Year's Eve, so we traveled to my parents and had pigs-in-a-blanket and punch. It was nice.

Welcome to 2008, ya'll.
